EAST BROOKFIELD; Mary (Matthews) O’Coin, 90, passed away on Thursday, February 25 at St Mary's Healthcare in Worcester. She was born in Dorchester, the daughter of Mary Burke Obershaw Fletcher, and was married to Leo H. O’Coin for 61 years. She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Witt of East Brookfield, a son, Mark O’Coin of Southbridge, three grandsons, IS1 Craig Makynen, USN Retired, of Brookfield, Scott Witt of Spencer, Sean O’Coin of Southbridge, and a great granddaughter, Olivia-Jane Makynen of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
She is predeseased by her husband, Leo O’Coin, her mother Mary Fletcher, a son Lawrence O’Coin, a daughter Debra O’Coin, and a step brother, A. Gordon Obershaw of Shrewsbury.
Mary lived almost all of her life in East Brookfield. She graduated from David Prouty High School in 1943, and during school she worked part time for Brookfield Orchards. After high school she worked for Klevin’s Shoe Company in Spencer for many years.
She was a member of the East Brookfield Seniors Club, St. John the Baptist Church, and the Boulette-Skyten American Legion Post. She enjoyed camping in Lake George, N. Y. since the 1950’s, trips to the Amish country in Pennsylvania and staying at Lenox in the Berkshires, a Caribbean cruise for her 58th wedding anniversary, and visiting Foxwoods. Mary and her husband spent many years helping their daughter, Debra, and other disabled people in the area with the Worcester Wheelers Bowling League and Special Olympics.
The Funeral will be held Tuesday, March 1 from the J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., with a Mass at 11 A.M. in St. John the Baptist Church, No. Brookfield Rd., East Brookfield. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, East Brookfield. A calling hour will precede the Mass from 9:30-10:30 in the funeral home.
