Ann (Mazzone) Shepard of Medford and Malden, left this life February 26, 2016. Devoted mother Marguerite Shepard DiCiaccio and her husband Nicolas P. DiCiaccio of Medford. She was predeceased by her parents Margherita and Constantino, former spouse Harold Mason Shepard, her brothers and their spouses, John and Angelina Mazzone, of Medford, Larry and Jean of Somerville, Gus and Dorothy of Lewiston, Maine, and sister Phyllis and her husband Joe Cecchini. Ann is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as grand and great grand nieces and nephews. Ann graduated from the Whidden Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, after which she joined the Army Nurse Corp. as a Second Lieutenant and served in Panama where she was promoted to First Lieutenant. After WWII she pursued a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, from Boston College. She attained positions as Assistant Director of Nurses at Lynn Hospital, and Whidden Memorial Hospital. In 1960 she earned a Master of Science in Nursing and taught for the Practical Nursing Program in Boston. After 13 years of teaching, she returned to Nursing Administration at the Winthrop Community Hospital until she retired in 1982. After a few years she returned to teaching Nursing Arts, at Salem State College. Ann loved her family, her Catholic faith, her nursing profession and the arts and humanities. Frequently she traveled to Italy which fired her passion for beauty and art. In her final years she pursued a hobby in crafting stained glass. She is remembered for her easy laugh, generous nature, and strength in leadership, as demonstrated by being elected the first woman Commander of ITAMS in Malden, and first woman State Commander in Massachusetts. Her energy, brilliant mind, and zest for life will be sorely missed.
