New Bedford – Doris E. Fernandes, age 85 of New Bedford, passed away on Wednesday February 24, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the loving wife of August “Gus” Fernandes and the daughter of the late Weston E. and Eda (Roberts) Dreher.
Born in New Bedford she has lived in this area all of her life. She worked as a Supervisor for Sears and Robuck for many years until her retirement. Doris was happiest when she was with her family and loved her Foxwoods and Newport Grand trips.
Her family includes 5 children: David A. Stephenson of New Bedford, Cathy M. Curran of Fairhaven, Elaine L. Soares of Dartmouth, Donna L. Pires of New Bedford and Carol A. Pires of Acushnet; 3 step- children: Robert A. Fernandes of New Bedford, Cindy L. Santos and Susan M. Costa both of Dartmouth;1 brother: Weston A. Dreher of Orleans. She was also survived by 17 grandchildren and 29 great –grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Doris was also the grandmother of the late Cathy E. Curran and the sister of the late Bruce T. Dreher.
Her funeral will be Friday beginning in the funeral home at 9:00 A.M. with a service in the funeral home at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will take place in the funeral home on Thursday evening from 4 – 8 P.M. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford.
