Obituary

Anne Kane was born to Coleman and Bridget (Curran) Faherty in Ballynahown, County Galway on July 20, 1925. Anne was the youngest of eight children. Both of her parents died when she was very young and she was brought up by her older siblings.

Anne sailed on the SS Marine Jumper and arrived in Boston 1947 as a native Gaelic speaker with very little English. She initially worked in Dedham as a domestic and soon found her way with friends to Hibernian Hall in Roxbury, where she loved dancing. There she met and fell in love with Anthony. They married on January 20, 1952 at St Mary’s in Dedham and settled in Dorchester. After starting a family, they saved to buy their first home, a triple-decker, on Homes Ave. In the late 1960’s, they moved one street over to Holiday St., where they remained until the mid-1970’s.

Anne was a hardworking and determined woman. As soon as her children were all settled into St. Peter’s School, she joined Local 26 and started waitressing for a variety of functions throughout the Boston area. It was not uncommon for her to work both a breakfast and lunch function, come home and prepare dinner for the family and then immediately head back out to work an evening function. She worked this hectic schedule for many years and made many memorable friends with the women that worked with her.

One of our most pleasant memories of our mother is that she was a prodigious baker. There was never a time in our house when there wasn’t some delicious bread to enjoy with a cup of tea. She was also a talented cook and excelled at big holiday meals, but we will always remember her Sunday roasts and her corned-beef and cabbage dinners. Around the same time, she also began to follow the ’67 Red Sox. She loved to listen to the game on the radio and knew everything about the team and the players.

Looking back, you would never find her just relaxing. In the evenings, she used to knit and produced numerous, hats, mittens and so many afghans over the years. When we were young, she jumped right into camping and loved the outdoor life. We remember clearly the time she drove us up to the top of Mount Washington in the summer of 1969.

Anne loved the beach and was right at home on the Cape. She was always taking us to the beach when we were kids, whether to South Boston, Dorchester, Wollaston, or Nantasket. Over the years, we toured all the great beaches on the Cape from Falmouth to P-Town as well as Hampton Beach in New Hampshire and others further up into Maine. We camped in tents or stayed in rustic cottages everywhere in between and she always made sure we had fun.

In 1976 Anne and Tony bought a retirement home in South Yarmouth, where they spent their summers each year until 2014. Around the late 70’s, they also began to winter in Florida and settled in Hobe Sound. They enjoyed their winters in Florida where they had many friends and enjoyed a wonderful social life. They continued to travel back and forth until 2014.

Anne was always cheerful and had something nice to say about everyone. She passed on February 20, 2016 and will be dearly missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.
Her funeral will be held from the P.E. Murray-F.J. Higgins, George F.
