Obituary




John Albert Norton of Hadley and Milton, MA passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the Copley at Stoughton after a two year struggle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was the husband of the late Judith A. (Olson) Norton for 59 years. John was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine Norton of Milton and was born on August 22, 1933 in Milton, MA.

John attended school in Milton where he played football, baseball and track. He graduated from Milton High School in 1952.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the U.S. 8th Army from 1953 to 1955 prior to being honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.

After his years of service in the military, he attended the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance.
John was employed by Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. at their headquarters in Boston, MA for 36 years until he retired in 1987.

John was active with Little League, Babe Ruth and Pony League Baseball starting in Milton, MA then continuing in Brockton, MA. He held various positions and served as President of West LL and Hancock LL in addition to coaching, umpiring and acting as treasurer.

John was a member of the Hancock Elementary School PTA and served as its first president.

He loved all sports, especially baseball. In his later years, he was an avid candlepin bowler and worked part-time at Maple Alleys in Brockton in order to stay close to the sport. His other hobbies included gardening and experiencing nature and wildlife.

John is survived by his 3 children and their spouses; David A. Norton and his wife Colleen of Mattapoisett, MA, Peter K. Norton and his wife Kristin White of Boston, MA, and Judith A. Berger and her husband Rick of Fort Myers, FL. He leaves behind 3 granddaughters; Cara Torres, Alicia Cupelo, and Rachel Norton and 2 great grandchildren; Olivia and Julianna Torres.

Visiting hours are omitted and burial with military honors will be held in Milton Cemetery, Milton, MA in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in John’s memory to the Massachusetts Audubon Society, 208 South Great Road, Lincoln, MA 01773.
