Richard Axel “Jay” Johnson, 86, of Quincy, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2016 after a brief illness. He was the deeply loving husband of Mildred (Matulas) Buckley Johnson who he lost in 2011. Born and raised in South Boston by Swedish immigrants, he was the eldest child of Mildred (Petersen) Johnson and Axel (Jonsson) Johnson. Jay was a retired bookkeeper and liquor store owner in South Boston. He was a member of the South Boston Wildcats Football Club, a formidable L Street Bathhouse handball player, and an award-winning bowler at the Kennedy Center’s Senior Olympics. Jay loved to travel, swim, play cribbage and play cards as often as he could. Jay is survived by his children Robert D. Buckley III and his wife Linda O’Brien Buckley of Hanover, Susan Buckley Johnson of Boston, and Victor Buckley Johnson of Fort Lauderdale. Cherished grandfather of R. David Buckley IV and his wife Jenny of South Boston, Richard Jonsson Buckley of Denver, and Christian O’Brien Buckley of Hanover. Devoted brother of Elaine (Johnson) Drew of Avon the late Paul Johnson and his wife Marilyn of Dorchester. Loving uncle to Kenneth Drew and his wife Kathy of Raynham and to James Drew and his wife Susan of Whitman and their families. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4-7 PM at the Casper Funeral Home in South Boston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 AM at Saint Brigid’s Church in South Boston. Interment at Blue Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of the late Mildred Buckley Johnson to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
