Obituary

John Lee Shelburn, 87, of Quaker Hill, Connecticut and Venice, Florida, passed away at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, on February 14,2016 after a brief battle with brain cancer.

He was born on May 12, 1928 to John Henry Shelburn and Mazie Carmen (Brown) Shelburn in New London , Connecticut.

He leaves a daughter, Jeanne Shelburn and her husband Barry Pinkowitz of Quaker Hill and a son, Keith Shelburn and his wife Joan ( Foley) Shelburn of West Chester, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Ainsley Pinkowitz, Benjamin Shelburn and his wife Alexandra, Katherine Shelburn and John Shelburn. His wife of 64 years, Jean Shelburn predeceased him in 2014.

He also leaves behind many dear friends locally and in Venice Florida where he would spend the winter.

John graduated from the Bulkeley School in 1945 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from Bryant College in Rhode Island. After graduation he worked at General Electric in Bridgeport and subsequently for 34 years as Comptroller for the Dow Chemical Company, Allyn’s Point Division in Gales Ferry Connecticut. During his career he also served as a member of the Board of Trustees for Mitchell College in New London.

John had many interests in his life, especially in sports. In his youth he played league baseball and was a life- long NY Yankee fan. His main love, however, was golf, at which he excelled. He was a charter member of the Pautipaug Country Club in Baltic, Connecticut, where he played competitively for many years and was Connecticut PGA Seniors champion twice.
He loved technology, always interested in the latest cars and newest electronic devices. In his later years, he was also interested in personal finance, following his investments daily on the Internet.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 26, 2016, at 11:00am at the Greenman Memorial Chapel in Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic. Inurnment will follow the service in the Columbarium adjacent to the chapel.
