Obituary

CHICOPEE – Claire M. (Murphy) Roe-Platanitis, 79, of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, February 11, 2016. She passed into Eternal Life at her home surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in the Roxbury section of Boston, Massachusetts on May 27, 1936, a beloved daughter of the late William A. and Margaret M. (Corcoran) Murphy. She was raised in Roxbury and graduated in 1954 from Saint Patrick High School in Roxbury. In 1955, she married Thomas J. “Sonny” Roe, Jr. and, as the wife of a career United States Air Force Military Veteran, she traveled to many places in the United States and overseas. Sonny retired in 1971 and they settled in Chicopee where they resided for the remainder of their lives. She was employed as a deli clerk for 27 years at the former Food Mart on Memorial Drive in Chicopee and retired in 2001. During her leisure time, Claire enjoyed Ballroom Dancing. She was a member of the Chicopee Senior Center, a volunteer for many years at the Big E Lost Person Center in West Springfield, a member of the Alzheimer’s Support Group and volunteered for many years as a Baby Buddy at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. She was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was predeceased by her two beloved husbands, Thomas J. “Sonny” Roe, Jr. who was Called Home on March 7, 1999 and Alexander “Babe” Platanitis who was Called Home on August 28, 2014. She leaves her six loving children, Dianne M. Roe Gallo and Steve Lieberman of Amherst, Deborah A. Roe of Chicopee, Thomas J. Roe, III and his wife, Cindy, of Winchester, NH, Mark A. Roe and Christine Johnson of Chicopee, Steven W. Roe and his wife, Susan, of Thousand Oaks, CA and Scott D. Roe of Chicopee; her ten cherished grandchildren, Richard Gallo, Meghan Gallo, Lauren Cochrane and Dan Stamborski, Lindsey Cubilette and her husband, Peter, Tiana Johnston and her husband, Ryan, Jason Roe, Connor Roe, Amanda Roe Lauer and her husband, Ivan, S. Christian Roe and Maebh Roe; her four cherished great-grandchildren, Cailyn Bolduc and Samuel, Isaac and William Johnston; her dear brother, Daniel A. Murphy and his wife, Patricia, of Plimpton, MA; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Roe, Platanitis and Murphy families. Besides her parents and her husbands, she was also predeceased by her dear brother, William A. Murphy; and her dear sister, Rita F. Wallace. Her funeral will be held on Thursday morning, February 18, 2016 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her Committal Service and Burial will be held at a later date at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
