Peter Michael DeBarros, 71, of Nantucket entered into eternal rest on February 6, 2016 after a long illness at Spaulding Hospital in Cambridge. He was born on September 11, 1944 in Acushnet, the son of the late Anna and Peter DeBarros, Sr.
Peter graduated from Nantucket High School in 1964 where he excelled in track.
He served his country and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1968.
Peter is survived by two sisters, Diane Perry of New Bedford and Pauline (Larry) Bogan of Hamden, Conn.; one daughter, Tiffany DeBarros of Hyannis; two grandchildren, Alaila and Mikey; and nephews, a niece and many cousins. He was predeceased by a baby brother Paul.
Peter lived year round on Nantucket Island since the 1980’s. He had his own business as a carpenter and was known for his precise attention to detail. He also managed his own seasonal rental housing.
Peter enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and attending the many seasonal events Nantucket has to offer. He especially enjoyed the time he had with his daughter and grandchildren. His favorite bible scripture was Psalm 23 which he requested to hear many times during the end of his illness.
The family would like to acknowledge and express sincere thanks to the staff of Elder Services of Cape Cod & the Islands, Nantucket Cottage Hospital, Mass. General Hospital, and Spaulding Hospital in Cambridge for all the care and comfort provided. We also appreciate the kindness and assistance of Peter’s many island friends who helped to enrich his quality of life.
A celebration of Peter’s life will begin with a visitation at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford on Sunday February 14, 2016 from 2-6 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 3 Federal St., Nantucket on Monday February 15, 2016 at 12 Noon.
