Ida Mary (Autiello) Volk, 88, of Methuen, Massachusetts, passed peacefully on Tuesday, February 02, 2016. Born in Lawrence, Ida was a first generation Italian immigrant and the eldest child of Alice (Zampelli) and Guiseppe Autiello. Ida graduated from Lawrence High School and worked briefly at the Watertown Arsenal before taking a job with the Internal Revenue Service.
Ida’s career at the IRS lasted 30 years, during which her intelligence, hard work, and good nature won her numerous promotions and many friends. She retired in 1984 as Division Chief.
When she wasn’t working, Ida loved to take a “trip”. With friends and family she traveled the world, returning home with fabulous stories and magical treasures for everyone. At home she was a loving and devoted sister spending endless contented hours with Jennie, Sam, Celia and Rita.
Ida found her greatest adventure and happiness with her grandsons, whether they were exploring Disney World, walking the beach or the avenues of NYC, mastering beer pong, or simply talking in her living room. For the last 29 years, the joy in Ida’s life came from “the kids”.
Ida enjoyed watching sports and baking. She made the best pizzelles on the planet.
Ida is survived, and will be dearly missed, by: her daughter Elisa O’Connor and her husband William of Bradford, MA, her grandsons, William O’Connor of Everett, MA, Patrick O’Connor of Newton, MA and Daniel O’Connor of Boston, MA. Her siblings, with whom she lived: Celia Knightly, Jennie Autiello, and Samuel Autiello, of Methuen, MA, and Rita Golec and her husband Joseph, also of Methuen, MA. As well as numerous Cousins, Godchildren, Nieces, Nephews, and friends. Ida was pre-deceased by her beloved brother-in-law, John J. Knightly Jr.
Ida’s family wishes to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff and residents at Nevins Nursing and Rehab Center for the loving care they provided over the last months. Your kindness and will always be remembered. Thanks, also, to Ida’s cousins and friends for their enduring love and support.
