Norman Alix Bergeron, 78, of New Bedford, died Friday January 29, 2016 suddenly at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary-Ellen Smith Bergeron; they were married for 49 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late J. Wilfrid and Ethel (Montplaisir) Bergeron, he lived in New Bedford all his life. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Mr. Bergeron was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School, the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMass Amherst, and Roger Williams University. He had been the owner/operator of Floral Village in New Bedford for ten years. He later worked for the City of New Bedford for 22 years in several capacities, retiring as an administrator in the Assessor's Office.
Active in the community, he loved politics and was involved in numerous groups and organizations and volunteered for several organizations, including the Buttonwood Senior Center. He served for several years on the School Committee of the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High school as well as on the Alumni Association.
Norm loved and was loved. He was a loyal friend, an anonymous benefactor, a loving son, faithful husband, beloved brother, and cherished uncle.
He is survived by a brother, Joseph W. Bergeron of Mashpee; a sister, Rita Childs of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Constance Lavimoniere and Lorraine Gamble St. Laurent.
His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday February 6, 2016 at 10 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours are omitted.
