ANDERSON--Roy Timothy Girt, 95, of Anderson passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital following an extended illness.

Roy was born on October 19, 1920 in Anderson. He was the tenth child of Isaac and Jennie Girt. Roy attended Anderson schools until he went to work in the mid 1930s. In 1942, Roy was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. He served in the Pacific Theatre on the islands of Guam and Okinawa building air strips during his tour of duty. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1945.

Upon returning to Anderson, Roy was hired as a stock chaser for Guide Lamp in 1946. Roy met his future wife and lifelong love, Lois Brown, while both were working at Guide, and the couple was married on November 27, 1948. Three years later, they welcomed their only son Ron. Roy retired as a fork truck driver from General Motors in 1983 after 37 years of services at Guide. Two years later, his only grandchild Andrea was born.

Much of his retirement was spent babysitting Andrea and supporting her in all of endeavors as she grew up. Roy enjoyed traveling, being outdoors, ice cream, reading and watching the news, helping Ron with home remodeling projects, and taking Saturday drives with Lois in his General Motors vehicles. He was also a proud member of the United Auto Workers 663.

Roy is survived by his wife Lois of 67 years, his son and daughter-in-law Ron and Caryn, his grandson-in-law and granddaughter Brad and Andrea Meadows, two brothers Paul (wife Nancy) and Joe (wife Rose), and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers; Floyd (wife Evelyn), Jim (wife Rhea), Thomas, and Robert, and seven sisters; Pearl (husband Joe) Butche, Ruth (husband George) Speedy, Naomi (husband Virgil) Summers, Sarah Meeker, Ethel Neeley, Elizabeth (husband Herman) Chapin, and Linnie (husband Jack) Kirby.

A funeral service will be held for Roy on Sunday, January 31 at 4 p.m. at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Brad and Andrea Meadows and Rev. Paul Kirby speaking. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 p.m. prior to the service.

A private burial will take place at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Riley Children’s Hospital.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Mark Lawlor and the nurses of 6 South at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital for their care and support.
