Leonard T.A. Hirst, 79, of Acushnet passed away suddenly on Wednesday January 27, 2016. He was the widower of Joan (Lipsett) Hirst.
Len is survived by his son Leonard and his wife Mary DeFrias, his daughter, Kelley O’Laughlin and her husband Michael, one grandson, Ian Hirst, three granddaughters, Alex and Sydney Beless, and Victoria Hirst, and one step-grandson, Alex Buaiz.
Born in New Bedford, he served on the New Bedford Police Department for over 33 years retiring as a lieutenant. Len loved golfing and playing pool with his friends. In addition to spending time with his grandchildren, he volunteered his time to teach the game of golf to children every summer. He enjoyed traveling to Aruba and Nassau with family and friends.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 until his discharge in 1959.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 1st from 4-7 PM at Saunders Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 2nd at 11 AM at St. Mary’s Church in Dartmouth. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery will be private.
