Barre - Burton Roy Frost (91) died peacefully after a short illness on January 23, 2016 with many family members by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret (Peg) Frost of Barre, MA, son, Arthur A. Frost and his wife Mary Springer of Barre, daughter, Susan Frost and companion Jim Holmes of Averill Park, NY, grandchildren, Joel and Seth Frost-Tift and Emma and Mariah Frost. He is also survived by his brother, Justin Frost and his wife, Corky Robinson, as well as countless family and friends from around the country. He is pre-deceased by a daughter, Elspeth (1954-1956), and his sister Winifred Williams.
Burt was born April 5, 1924 in Syracuse, NY, son of Harlan M. and Vera N. Frost. He attended grammar schools and high school in Toledo, OH before graduating from Leonia, NJ High School in 1942.
Burt was drafted out of Rutgers University into the Army Air Corps with basic training in Miami Beach, FL then Weather Observer training at Chanute Field, Illinois and Asheville, NC. He was assigned to the 12th Weather Squadron, serving in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations where he earned two Battle Stars for the Rome/Arno Campaign and Southern France Invasion. He was discharged as a Sergeant on January 1, 1946 at Fort Dix, NJ.
Burt received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota. He attended a Master’s program in Edinburgh, Scotland, and received a Master’s in Education from Worcester State College.
Burt worked at Fairmont Foods, had active National Guard duty during the Korean Conflict, was Assistant Director at Stetson Home in Barre, and taught in a number of area schools. Burt particularly enjoyed tutoring students who were unable to attend school and his work was appreciated by the students and their families.
Burt was an active volunteer. Most recently he delivered Meals on Wheels and was a member of Band of Voices, Barre Historical Commission, Ware River Watershed Advisory Council, and Quabbin Retired Teachers Association.
Burt had a strong agricultural interest which he expressed in his gardening, fruit tending, clearing of stone walls, and wood cutting, all done by hand. Family and friends were of deep importance and he and his wife hosted many large family gatherings.
A remembrance service will be held at the Barre Senior Center, 557 South Barre Rd, Barre, MA on Saturday, February 6th from 12:00 - 1:00. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service and/or join the family for a reception from 1:00 - 3:30. In lieu of flowers, donations of time or money may be made in Burt’s memory to a charity of your choice.
