Whitman – Ruth C. (Monaghan) Hayes 74, a longtime resident of Whitman, died Friday, January 8 after a brave battle with lung cancer. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph V. Hayes.
Born in Boston she was the daughter of the late John D. and Blanche (Dubrelle) Monaghan.
Ruth had been a resident of Whitman since 1966, and was a familiar face and an active member of the Whitman Community. Prior to her retirement, she had worked in the office of the Town Clerk as well as serving as a registrar for the town and had been a longtime member of the Whitman Mother’s Club.
She enjoyed crafting and the challenge of a good crossword puzzle, but she had truly cherished the times she spent with her children and driving them to their countless events as well as following the many activities of her beloved grandchildren.
She is survived by her children Michael Hayes and his wife Germaine of Newmarket, NH, Joelle VonGeorge and her husband Rick of Elizabeth City, NC, Janine Kaplinger and her fiancée David Tammaro of East Bridgewater, her sister Lorraine Hudson of Mattapoisett and her sister-in-law Helen Hayes of Whitman. She is also survived by her grandchildren Margaret Hayes of Newmarket, NH, Thomas VonGeorge of Elizabeth City, NC, Corporal Joseph VonGeorge and his wife Lindsey of Oceanside, CA and Joshua, Jessica and Dylan Kaplinger all of East Bridgewater.
Family and friends are invited to attend her funeral Mass to be held Friday January 15 at 9:00 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will be private and to honor Ruth’s wishes all other services are omitted.
