Obituary

Francisco "Supai" Joia, 94, of New Bedford died May 15, 2002 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.

He was the husband of the late Marie (Renne) Joia and the late Matilda P. (Gonzales) Joia, and son of the late Francisco and Angelina (Randal) Joia.

Mr. Joia was born in Sao Vincente, Cape Verde, and had lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.

Mr. Joia was formerly employed as a cook in the Merchant Marines for 18 years until his retirement in 1975.

Survivors include 3 sons, SebastiĆ£o R. Joia of Brockton, and Bernardino R. Joia and Manuel R. Joia, both of New Bedford; 5 daughters, Julia R. Thornton, Anna R. Barros, and Arminda R. Koroski, all of New Bedford, Ezaura R. Andrade of Peabody and Candida R. Howcroft of Acushnet; 2 stepdaughters, Dinora Monteiro of East Providence and Mary Monteiro of New Bedford; 3 sisters, Julia Levy of Boston, and Josephine Lopes and Armanda Silva, both of Marion; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordSaturday, May 18th at 8 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 9 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Friday, May 17th 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
