Duncan T. Hazel
Retired Tewksbury Hospital Safety Officer/Safety Director

TEWKSBURY: Duncan T. Hazel, age 74, a resident of Billerica for 26 years, formerly of Tewksbury, passed away suddenly at Lowell General Hospital- Saints Campus, on Friday, December 25, 2015.
He was the beloved husband of Evelyn R. (Gomes) Hazel, who passed away on November 22, 2008.
Born in Lowell on August 6, 1941, he was the son of the late George M. Hazel and the late Barbara (Butterfield) Hazel.
Duncan was raised in Tewksbury, graduated from Tewksbury Memorial High School in 1960, and later attended Middlesex Community College.
He worked at Tewksbury Hospital for 40 years, retiring in 2006 as the Safety Officer/Safety Director.
Duncan was most recently a guide at the Public Health Museum in Massachusetts located at Tewksbury Hospital and served on its Board of Directors. In addition, he authored and contributed several personal stories for their newsletter. Duncan was an avid defender of Tewksbury Hospital’s historical significance, properties and its two cemeteries.
Duncan was a member of the Tewksbury Historical Society and the Tewksbury Gentlemen’s Club.
He enjoyed attending family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. An engaging storyteller, he enjoyed sharing his knowledge of Tewksbury’s history and how it shaped his life.
He is survived by four children, David Hazel and his wife Camille of Bedford, NH, Tewksbury Fire Chief, Michael Hazel and his wife Kathryn of Chelmsford, Mark Hazel and his wife Anne of Rapid City, SD, and Laurie-Ann Schena and her husband Blaine of Naples, FL; ten grandchildren, Stephen, Mary-Kathryn, and Kevin Hazel, Mary, Joseph, Michael, John Paul, and Jacinta Hazel, and Vanessa and Kendra Schena; two sisters, Barbara Voulgaris of Dracut and Sarah Jane Paquette of Lowell; sisters and brothers in law, Bea Cunha and her husband Joseph Cunha of Dracut, Rose Mary Vervaert and her husband Lou of West Simsbury, CT, David Gomes and his wife Susan of Lexington, and Anthony R. Gomes Jr. and his wife Ethel of Littleton; also many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Calling hours are Tuesday, Dec. 29, from 4-8 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Relatives and friends are asked to meet at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at the Tewksbury Congregational Church, 10 East St., Tewksbury for his Funeral Services. Interment to follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Public Health Museum in Massachusetts, 365 East St., Tewksbury, MA 01876 or to the Tewksbury Historical Society, P.O. Box 522, Tewksbury, MA 01876.
