Sally (Blanchard) Vaughan
1926-2015
BUXTON- Sally B. Vaughan died December 12, 2015 at The Gorham House. She was born in Portland, Maine, the youngest of four children of Raymond C. and Helen (Overholser) Blanchard.
Daughter of a lumberman, Sally developed an early love for the woods and mountains of western Maine; and lifelong knew a passionate appreciation of natural beauty: flowers, trees, animals; and of music. She attended Portland schools, graduating in 1944 from Deering High School, where she was active in the Ski Club and served as secretary of her class. She continued her education at Westbrook College; and following graduation in 1946 worked for several years at E. C. Jones Insurance Agency.
In 1947, she married Richard Vaughan, settling in Portland, and together they raised their five children. As their children grew, she worked evenings at Union Mutual Insurance Co. In later years, she and Richard built a home in Buxton, where they enjoyed gardening and where she delighted in feeding the songbirds and turkeys that flocked to their home.
A strong individual, Sally shared herself with those life brought her way, brightening their day with her warmth and humor. An inspiration for many, she served as a role model for us, her children.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, who died in April of 2015; by her parents; and by siblings Jane Luthe, Anne Foote, and Raymond Blanchard, Jr. She is survived by her children: Betsy Robinson & Don Heatley of Portland; Richard Vaughan, Jr. & wife Janet Griffin-Vaughan of South Berwick; Nancy McDonough & husband John McDonough of Buxton; Deborah Vaughan of Buxton; and David Vaughan & partner Bill Walsh, of Hampden; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and by her cherished friend, Katrina Kern Rich.
