Shirley M. Varin, 87, of Smithfield, died peacefully, Wednesday, December 9, 2015 surrounded by her family. She was the widow of Ernest O. Varin and Irving J. Maynard, Sr.
Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late William and Ethel (Mitchell) O’Neil. She had lived in Smithfield for many years, most recently at Village at Waterman Lake.
Shirley worked in the banking industry until she retired in 1985. She was an avid reader and participated in bowling leagues for many years. As a young girl, she could most often be found at the roller skating rink. Shirley was very involved in her children’s activities as they grew up, including scouts, school activities and she was the President of the PTA for many years. She and her late husband loved square dancing at many locations throughout New England. She also traveled frequently and enjoyed extensive cruising.
She is survived by her daughters: Karen M. McCaffrey of Glocester, Nancy J. Babota and her husband, James M., of Pawtucket, Dorothy A. Yeamen and her husband, James A., of Richmond, her son, Irving Maynard, Jr. of Coventry and her grandchildren: Julie and Samuel. She was the mother of the late Muriel C. Coppage, mother in law of the late Edward W. McCaffrey and sister of the late William O’Neil, Jr.
Visitation Monday 8:30-10:30 am from the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville.
