Herbert H. "Herbie" Upton, a 17 year resident of Malden and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Friday, December 4, 2015 at The Sawtelle Hospice House in Reading following a valiant struggle with cancer. He was 70 years old.
Herbie was born in Boston on December 7, 1944, a son of the late Joseph A. Upton and Emily (Herring) Upton. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School. Herbie worked for over 44 years for the City of Boston in the Department of Public Works - Highway Department until he retired in 2005 as a Supervisor. Herbie was a member of Bunker Hill Council #62 Knights of Columbus, and The Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, boating at his house in Otisfield, Maine, cooking, and cookouts with family and friends and watching the Patriots.
Herbie is the loving husband of 22 years to Carol A. Upton. He is the loving father of Carissa Upton, Herbert H. Upton Jr. and his wife Lori, Lynn Upton, Jess Upton, Patrick Upton, Stephen Greaves, and the late Shannon. He is the loving Papa to 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is the beloved brother of Mel Upton, Emily Lorino, Maureen Doherty, Blanche Demling, Ruth Capraro, and the late Margie Fitzpatrick, Joseph Upton, Charles Upton, and Jocko Upton. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Herbie's Funeral on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. His burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
