Obituary

Thomas R. "Tommy" Fitzgerald, a 44 year resident of Billerica and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life tragically following an automobile accident on Thursday, December 3, 2015. He was 72 years old.

Tommy was born in Boston on August 10, 1943, a son of the late George F. Fitzgerald and Mary K. (Dineen) Fitzgerald. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1960. Tommy began working on the Boston waterfront as a longshoreman over 55 years ago and later became the Business Agent for the Steamship Clerks Union Local # 1066 of the International Longshoreman's Association. He was also acting Chief Clerk for many years at the Conley Terminal in South Boston for the same union. He was very active in his 3 sons hockey careers throughout their lives and was a former President, Board Member and Coach for the Billerica Youth Hockey Program. He also coached hockey in Charlestown for the Milt Schmitt Hockey program earlier in his life. He also coached for the Billerica Pop Warner Football Program and as a young man in Charlestown, he played and coached for the Charlestown Townies Football Team. He worked at the Boston Garden many years ago with the bull gang and enjoyed watching the Boston Bruins and later became a season ticket holder for the Bruins. Most importantly of all in Tommy's life was his family, he cherished the quality times watching the many sporting events of his 3 sons and then later on in his life he became a passionate fan of each and everyone of his grandchildren and the accomplishments they have made in sporting events and dance recitals.

Tommy is the adored husband of 48 years to Sharon R. (McNeil) Fitzgerald. He is the devoted father of Tom Fitzgerald and his wife Kerry of North Reading, Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Stephanie of Wilmington and Brian Fitzgerald and his wife Amy of Woburn. He is the loving Pa to Ryan, Casey, Jack, Brendan, Nolan, Riley, Shae, Liam, Devin and Addison. He is the beloved brother of Gerry Tkachuk and her husband John "Chuck" of Medford. He is the brother-in-law of Brian McNeil and his wife Patti and the late James "Crash" McNeil and his surviving wife Joanne. He is the nephew of David Fitzgerald and his wife Joan. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.


Relatives and friends are invited to attend Tommy's Funeral on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. His burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 from 3 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
