Obituary

Edna S. Roth, age 96, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2015 at the Stanley R. Tippett Hospice House in Needham.

Born and educated in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Jennie Stepak. Edna was a 1941 graduate of New York University. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree in biology, Edna found employment during WWII working in laboratories of the United States Military in several locations around the country. She and her entomologist husband, Louis M. Roth, moved several times before they settled in Sherborn, 1954.

After the arrival of her son Marc, she made providing for her family needs her priority. After several years at home, Edna became employed with the Town of Sherborn as Librarian at the Dowse Memorial Library. During her tenure, with the gift of Richard and Mary B. Saltonstall, construction of the Sherborn Library was completed in 1971. Edna undertook the task of transferring approximately 20,000 books to the new location, not to mention furnishings, files, equipment, various objects and artwork. That year also saw the start of the Friends of the Sherborn Library. After her retirement, Edna remained involved with committees overseeing various improvements to the library. She thoroughly enjoyed this work and was quick to lend her time and expertise when called upon. Edna was also an active member of the Sherborn Council on Aging until last year.

Predeceased by Louis in 2003, she is survived by her son, Marc Roth of Washington, D.C. She was also the sister of Barnett Stepak, late of Pennsylvania.

Funeral services will be held in private. Arrangements were with John Everett & Sons, 4 Park Street at Natick Common, Natick.
