Emil "Dutchie" J. Yunghans, 90, of Watertown, MA, passed away on November 20, 2015 surrounded by his family.
Dutchie is lovingly survived by his wife, Annette Yunghans, daughter Carol H. Palmer, and stepdaughter Denise M. Merlino and her significant other Darren R. Durfee; brother Herman Yunghans and his wife Judith; and sister-in-law Sandra Yunghans. Devoted grandfather to Marc and his wife Zrinka Palmer; Eric and his wife Jennifer Palmer; Shannon Cunninghan and Matthew Merlino. His family will remember him as a kind man who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Dutchie is survived by several in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifetime friends, especially dear friends Bruce Jacobson and John Woods. He will be terribly missed by his furry friend Nina.
He is preceded in death by his parents Emil C. and Sarah (Jones) Yunghans, his wife Carolyn (Hyde) Yunghans, his sister Janette Balben, brother Dr. Carl Yunghans, son in-law David Palmer, and stepson Joseph L. Merlino, Jr.
Dutchie was born September 6, 1925, in Mont Vernon, NH, son of the late Emil C. and Sarah (Jones) Yunghans. In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly and courageously served his country during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Upon returning home from the war he worked for Metropolitan Ice Co., Tip-Top Bread Co., H.P. Hood & Sons, and the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority where he retired in 1990. He was a gentleman who enjoyed spending time and traveling with his wife. Dutchie was an avid reader, skilled gardener, and loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all. Semper Fi.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, November 28, 2015, at 10 a.m. at the Gate of Heaven Church, 615 E. Fourth Street, S. Boston, MA. The burial will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Ave. Bourne, MA. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dutchie’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to a charity of your choice in his memory.
