Rose (Downes) Arnold, age 100, of Arlington, formerly of Winchester, passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital on November 19, 2015. She was the beloved wife of the late Herbert W. Arnold, Sr. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Mary (Murphy) Downes.
Mrs. Arnold received her education at Radcliffe College, obtained her Master’s degree at Boston University, and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. She was a 6th grade teacher in the Somerville Public School System for many years, retiring from the classrooms at the age of 89.
Mrs. Arnold is survived by her children: Margo Cardozo, Bert W. Arnold, Bill E. Arnold, Tom D. Arnold and Edward Arnold, 11grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was also the dear sister of the late Tom, Edward, Philip and Richard Downes,
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Sun., Nov. 22, from 3-6 PM, and again on Monday at 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Agnes Church, Arlington , at 10AM. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Rose’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
