Marcelino J. "Charlie" Gomes, 86, of New Bedford died Thursday November 12, 2015 at Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility after a brief illness. He was the husband of Dolores "Lolly" (Senna) Gomes.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Jose Pedro Gomes and Rosa Castro Lopes, he lived in New Bedford since 1948.
He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.
Mr. Gomes was formerly employed as a merchant seaman for the Exxon Corporation, having sailed the world for 44 years until his retirement. He later worked for Stop and Shop in his retirement.
Charlie had a good sense of humor, loved politics, and dabbled in the stock market.
He is survived by his wife, Lolly; three sons, Fernando M. Gomes of New Bedford and Florida, Norman M. Gomes of the Philippines, and James M. Gomes of Florida; his uncles, Arthur Castro, Jose Castro, and Joao Castro; two grandsons, Fernando Gomes, Jr. and Marc Gomes; and many cousins.
He was the father of the late Charles M. Gomes.
His Funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 9 AM.
