Ellen Harkins, a 65 year resident of Charlestown and formerly of Clonmany, County Donegal, Ireland, entered into eternal life on Friday, November 6, 2015 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a brief illness. She was 103 years old.
Ellen was born in Clonmany, County Donegal, Ireland on December 2, 1911, a daughter of the late William Harkin and Unity (Gill) Harkin. She grew up in Clonmany, County Donegal, Ireland where she was educated. Ellen immigrated to the United States as a young lady and began working as a Seamstress in the garment district of Boston where she worked for over 50 years. She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. Ellen enjoyed listening to Irish music and was self taught at playing the accordion, attending the Donegal Balls and knitting.
Ellen is the devoted sister of the late Mary Smith, Annie Harkin and Daniel Harkin. She is the loving aunt to Patrick Smith of Ossipee, New Hampshire, Una Marie Graves of West Wareham, Kathleen Perito of Wilmington, Daniel Smith of Charlestown, Theodore Smith of Malden, Dorothy Smith of Charlestown, William Smith of Malden, Ramona Allard of Franklin, Aileen Smith of Charlestown, the late Patrick Harkin, Thomas Smith and her numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Ellen's Funeral on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by her Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. Her burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours will be on Monday, November 9, 2015 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
