…USMC Korean War Vet. Tewks-Wilm Elks; 87
TEWKSBURY - George Charles Greene, age 87, a well known and active member of the Tewksbury community, died peacefully on Wednesday evening, October, 21, at Wingate at Andover, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Mary Veronica (Massa) Greene, with whom he had celebrated a sixty-fifth wedding anniversary this past September 16th.
George was born in Cambridge, one of five children of the late Patrick and Hnora (O’Keefe) Greene, and raised in Cambridge, where he graduated from Rindge Tech in 1946. He enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a Drill Instructor. His overseas service with the Marines included a Mediterranean tour aboard the U.S.S. Midway.
After his honorable discharge, he began a career in sales. He retired from T.V. Guide in 1992, after 30 years as a sales representative.
He raised his family in Tewksbury beginning in 1956, and was active as an Usher at St. William’s Church; was a former officer and 50 year member of the Tewksbury-Wilmington Elks, Lodge 2070, where he also served on the Bingo Committee for over 20 years; a member of the American Legion, Post 259 in Tewksbury; served as Coach for the Pee Wee A Hockey League; operated a Real Estate office; and served the Town as an elected member of the Planning Board in the 1970’s. He was also proud to have played for the “Farm Team” of the St. Louis Cardinals professional baseball league in his “younger days.”
Besides his wife, he leaves three children, Robert George Greene of Lowell, Carol Ann Greene and her spouse, Wayne Olson of Lowell, and Lisa Marie Greene of Tewksbury; three grandchildren, Kyle Greene and his wife Chelsea of Wilmington, Alyssa Greene of Lowell, and Nichole Remillard of Lowell; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and was predeceased by his sisters, Edith Traill, Mildred Garvin; and brothers, Frank Greene and Charles Greene.
Memorial visiting hours are Saturday, Oct. 31, from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER, Ph.
