Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – John Francis “Jack” “Red” Hurley, Jr., 79, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life from the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and wonderful caregivers. He was born in Springfield on June 17, 1936, the beloved son of the late John F. Hurley, Sr. and Catherine T. (McCarthy) Hurley. He was born and raised on Mooreland Street in Springfield and he lived on Hungry Hill his entire life. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War and attained the rank of Torpedoman’s Mate Third Class. He served with the Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 108 and received the Navy Good Conduct Medal. Following his military service, he was a firefighter for 38 years for the City of Springfield and retired in 1997 as a Lieutenant. He was a member of the Springfield Firefighters Privates Club and the Springfield Police and Firefighters Retirement Association. Jack also served his community as Vice President of the Hungry Hill Civic Association. He was a former communicant and Senior Altar Server at the former Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield and was currently a communicant of Mary, Mother of Hope Church in East Springfield. Above all, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather who showered his family with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his beloved son, John F. Hurley, III who was Called Home on January 29, 2001; and his two dear sisters, Margaret Gloster and Catherine “Tootsie” Aberdale. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Janet R. (Strawlovitz) Hurley. They were married on September 23, 1961 at Holy Cross Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 54 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving son, Timothy J. Hurley and his wife, Gail, of Longmeadow; his dear daughter-in-law, Ann Hurley of Springfield; his four cherished grandchildren, Jake, Josh, Sean, and Kathleen Hurley; his dear sister-in-law, Marie Zeppa and her husband, Leo, of Springfield; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Hurley and Strawlovitz families. Jack had a soft spot in his heart for Boston Terriers and will be missed by his special friend, his dog, Bridget. His family would like to thank the staffs at both the Renaissance Manor and the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke for their compassion and care for Jack. His funeral will be held on Friday morning, October 23, 2015 at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177) 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107 (the funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, East Springfield, MA 01104. His burial with United States Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, October 22, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040 or to Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, Springfield, MA 01104.
