Charles L. Vayo, 95, of Worcester died Sunday, October 18th in UMASS Memorial Medical Center – University Campus surrounded by his family. He leaves his wife of 72 years, Mildred E. (O’Donnell) Vayo; four daughters, Betty Owens and her husband, Mike of Auburn, Judy Wheelden and her partner, Paul Anderson of West Yarmouth, Diane Hagan of Framingham and Sharon Williams and her husband, David of Garland, Texas; two brothers, Robert Vayo of Auburn and David Vayo and his wife, Jean of Sterling; a sister, Norma Candela of Worcester; four grandchildren, Patrick Owens and his wife, Cathy, Michelle Owens, Christopher Wheelden and Heather Ferguson and her husband Brian; four great grandchildren, Kelly, Michael, Connor and Nathan and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Alice Turner.
He was born in Milford, the son of Leon C. and Helen (Ploch) Vayo. Mr. Vayo was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving as Captain during World War II and the Korean War. Charles was a pilot with the Flying Tigers during World War II. Mr. Vayo was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and the VFW. His passion in life was flying. He also enjoyed watching and playing golf.
A calling hour will be held on Thursday, October 22nd from 9:30 until 10:30 AM in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 11:00 AM in St. Joseph’s Church, 189 Oxford Street, Auburn. Burial will on Friday, October 23rd at 12:30 PM in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue, Bourne, MA.
