Robert L. Thatcher, 85, of Westport died Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was husband of the late Joyce P. (Johnson) Thatcher.
Born in Dartmouth, son of the late Edward N. and Annette (Martin) Thatcher, he had lived in Dartmouth his entire life prior to moving to Westport in 1999. A veteran of the Korean War, he served his country in the Unites States Marine Corps. Prior to retirement in 1990, he worked for New England Telephone. He was a lifelong member of the Paskamansett Beagle Club in Dartmouth where he raised and trained beagles and was a well known AKC Beagle Hare Hound Judge. Mr. Thatcher volunteered many hours to Dartmouth youth sports, coaching football, basketball and baseball. He was the recipient of the Vail Award in 1973.
Survivors include 3 sons: Tom Estrella of New Bedford, Douglas Thatcher of Mattapoisett and Robert Thatcher of Westport; 3 daughters: Jill Crooks of New Bedford, Lori Boucher of CT and Debra Thatcher of Westport; 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his companion: Jane Sykes of Westport.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Saturday, October 17, 2015 at the Potter Funeral Home at 10:00 A.M.
Calling hours Friday 5 - 8 P.M.
Interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Dartmouth.
