Forrest W. “Woody” Elsmore, age 81, of Mansfield, formerly of Rockland and Brockton, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Norwood Hospital in Norwood. He was the former husband of Rita (Larkin) Elsmore of Rockland
Born in Brockton, MA on February 17, 1934, he was a son of the late Vance and Edith (Rogers) Elsmore.
He grew up and was educated in South Boston Schools. During the Korean War, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy and was honorably discharged with the rank of Engineman Third Class.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Elsmore worked in the warehouse at Stop & Shop in Readville for 15 years, and when younger at the former Quincy Shipyard.
While living in Rockland, Woody was a communicant of Holy Family Church and was known around town as “Measuring Sam”. He had a keen sense of humor, and enjoyed crossword puzzles, New England sports, people watching and being a good friend to those around him.
He is survived by his children Cheryl Elsmore and Darren Elsmore both of Rockland. He was the brother of Linton Elsmore, Ronald Elsmore, Bernard Elsmore and the late Lee, and Wayne Elsmore. He is also survived by his granddaughters Meghan and Kaylee, his longtime friend Jane E. Waters of Mansfield, her children Peter and Yvonne and her grandson Jaden.
His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Friday, October 16th at 9:00 A.M. in Holy Family Church, 403 Union St., Rockland. Burial with military honors will follow at Holy family Cemetery in Rockland.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, October 15th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
In lieu of flowers, Woody’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St., Boston, MA 02108.
