Obituary

G. Jean (Goodwin) Gowen age 86, of Brockton, died Tuesday October 6, 2015 at West Acres Nursing Home after a period of failing health. She was the devoted wife of the late George F. Gowen. Jean was born in Quincy and raised in Maine and Dorchester, a daughter of the late Louis and Velma (Boivin) Goodwin. She had been a resident of Brockton since 1949.
A graduate of Jeremiah Burke High School in Boston, Jean furthered her education at Miss French’s School of Design in Boston and earned an associate’s degree. She retired as an office administrator from the Women’s Educational Industrial Union in Boston. Jean was also a talented dress designer and seamstress. At one time she had been a top sales associate and sewing instructor at Singer Sewing Machine in Brockton.
Jean was a longtime and active member of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Brockton. She was a past president of the church, a Sunday school teacher, member of the Women’s Fellowship and founder of the Literary Group.
Jean’s true joy in her life was her family especially spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved her visits to West Dennis with her friend Ellie.
Jean is survived by her four children Sandy J. Lioy and her husband W. Peter Lioy of Carver; George F. Gowen, III and his fiancée Bettina P. Rago of Scotch Plains, NJ; Robert W. Gowen and his wife Paula of Brockton and Jamie G. Pelletier and her husband William of Brockton. She also leaves many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Jean was the sister of Joanne Ramsey of Texas, Jerry Goodwin of Medford, MA; George Goodwin of Maine and the late Jacqueline Roach-Wentzel.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (rte.123) Brockton on Saturday Oct. 10, 1-4 pm. A Memorial Service will be held Monday October 12 at 11am in the Universalist Unitarian Church of Brockton, 325 West Elm Street, Brockton, MA. Burial will be private.
