Colonel Carter E. Hudson (Ret.)

Augusta, GA – Colonel (Retired) Carter E. Hudson of Augusta died on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at the age of 78. He was born in Cullman, AL.

The funeral service will be at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home Chapel in Cullman, AL, Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Don Ware and Max Carter officiating. Interment will follow in New Hope No. 1 Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Hudson and Lela Mae Elmore Hudson; three brothers, Lowell Hudson, Dwight Hudson and James Hudson; and four sisters, Mertis Reese, Mergie Hudson, Clara Bell, and Nellie Davis.

Survivors include his wife, Mary McClain Hudson; daughter, Leah (Cevin) Clay; one son, John (Lauren) Hudson; three grandchildren, Rachel Clay, Anna Clay, and William Hudson; three sisters, Opal Williams, Inas (Dewey) Briscoe, and Nedra Compton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. He will be greatly missed by all.

Carter attended school at Jones Chapel and graduated from West Point High School in 1955, in Cullman County, AL. He attended St. Bernard College and Howard College (now Samford University) and earned a bachelor’s degree in religion. In 1965 he received a degree in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX. He also received a master’s degree in psychology and counseling from Ball State University in Muncie, IN.

Carter was ordained to the gospel ministry at Harmony Baptist Church in Cullman County, AL in 1958. He was commissioned as an officer into the United States Army and served as a chaplain for 9 years active duty and continued for an additional 17 years in a reserve capacity. He served one year in Vietnam and three years in Germany. From 1976-1980 Carter was employed by Roosevelt Warm Springs Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, Warm Springs, GA. He served as staff chaplain at Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, GA from 1980 until his retirement in 1995. After his retirement, he served as pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Gibson, GA for three years. Carter was a member of The Hill Baptist Church in Augusta, GA.

Heritage Funeral Home will be in charge of all arrangements in Cullman, AL.
