Carl Thornhill, 79, of New Bedford died Friday September 25, 2015 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Judith (Vieira) Thornhill.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late John and Doris (Bithell) Thornhill, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Thornhill was formerly employed as a maintenance foreman for the New Bedford Housing Authority for 30 years. After his retirement, he ran the pro shop at the Whaling City Golf Course.
He was a member of the Low Tide Yacht Club, the Hawthorne Country Club, and the New Bedford Rifle and Revolver Gun Club. He was an avid golfer, gardener, and sailor. He enjoyed working on boats and building boats. In his younger days, he drove stock cars at the Seekonk Speedway. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1956-1960.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mark, Robert, and John Thornhill; two grandchildren, Andrew Thornhill and Katie Thornhill and her husband Joseph Iaccorino; his foster son, Joe Street and his children, Courtney and Colby; his brother, John Thornhill, Jr. and his wife Margaret; and nieces and nephews, Donna, Kerri, Mike, and Scott and their children;
He was predeceased by his niece, Sharon.
