Obituary

Francis Anthony Gillespie of Dorchester MA, died peacefully on August 30, 2015 following his third battle with cancer. Frank was born in Ireland on January 21, 1943 and grew up in the Dublin suburb of Ranelagh. He was the son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Conway) Gillespie. After completing primary grades at the local national school and the high school program at the Synge Street School he joined the Sacred Hearts Congregation. Mr. Gillespie then came to the United States at age nineteen to study philosophy and theology at Queen of Peace Seminary, Jeffrey Center, NH. After returning to Ireland for his ordination as a Catholic Priest in 1969, he served at parishes in southeastern Massachusetts and greater Boston in very valued ministries, especially among youth. Frank also provided priestly ministry for Dignity Boston. Counseling became a greater part of his life focus and he resigned the priesthood in the 1980’s to carry forward his vocation of helping people make sense of their lives by completing graduate studies to acquire a master’s degree in counseling psychology. Frank then opened the Counseling Place, his practice, as a licensed mental health provider in Watertown MA where he developed a reputation as a sensitive and effective psychotherapist. He was particularly skilled in providing support for those interested in bereavement, relationships, LGBT issues and personal spirituality. Clients- none of whom were turned away because of inability to pay-and his many friends found in him a profoundly generous man. All those he touched will miss his wit, his Irish lilt and his gentle and supportive spirit. Frank is survived by his only sibling Anne Gillespie McCartie of Dublin and her children, Ciara, Conor, and Joanne. He also leaves five great nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends on both sides of the Atlantic. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of thanksgiving Frank’s life in the Resurrection Chapel at the mausoleum of St. Michael Cemetery, American Legion Highway, Forest Hills MA at 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 19, 2015. Donations in Frank’s memory may be made to your most loved effort to bring compassion to our world.
