Obituary

BUZZARDS BAY-Walter J. Zawistowski, 78, of 46 Andrews Street, formerly of 8 Tallawanda Drive, Worcester died Wednesday, May 18th in BU Medical Center after a short illness. His wife, Shirley A. (Grenier) Zawistowski died in 1992. He leaves a daughter, Johanna wife of Harry Epstein of Davie, FL, a brother, Chester Zawistowski of Millbury, 2 sisters, Helen Kroll of Worcester and Hedy Larson of Millbury, 2 grandchildren, Adrienne and Joseph Epstein both of Davie, FL, several nephews and nieces. A son, Peter Zawistowski died in 1983, 2 brothers Joseph and Stanley Zawistowski and a sister, Sister Evelyn Zawistowski predeceased him.

He was born in Worcester the son of Joseph and Anna (Zambrzycki) Zawistowski, graduated with a bachelor degree in social studies from the College of the Holy Cross in 1949 and earned a masters degree in education from Fitchburg State College. He was an Army veteran of WWII. Mr. Zawistowski worked as a social studies teacher for Auburn Middle School for 48 years, retiring in 1989. In 1986, he was the first teacher from Auburn Middle School to receive the Teacher of the Year Award from the Massachusetts Teachers Association and he received an honorary citation from the Massachusetts State Senate recognizing his achievement. He was an avid piano player.

The funeral is Monday, May 23rd from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester with a Mass at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. A calling hour is from 9:30 until 10:30 the morning of the funeral in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265.
