Obituary

Victor “Garcia” Halevi, formerly Steven Victor Richman, died on August 7, 2015 after a brief illness. He was born on June 9, 1944 in Providence, RI, son of the late Florence and Saul Richman. He leaves a sister, Martha Carroll of Mexico, and a niece Jennifer Sarito Carroll of Colorado, his devoted dog Louie, and many beloved friends.

He spent his childhood in New Bedford, MA and his high school years in Brookline, MA. He graduated from Columbia University with a BA in Philosophy and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst with a MA in Forestry. After serving in the Coast Guard Reserve during the Vietnam War, he traveled widely in Europe and Israel and lived on the West and East Coasts of the USA, finally settling in Westport, MA where he lived for the past 20 years.

He had many occupations including camp counselor, environmental worker and advocate, fisherman, legal assistant, school teacher, health care worker, merchant marine, and launch pilot at Tripp’s Boatyard. He was also the proprietor of Coastal Livery of Westport.

Garcia was a folk singer, accompanying himself on banjo, guitar, mountain dulcimer and double bass. He loved sharing the music and stories of the people with his many friends. His time and talent were given freely to the causes of peace and environmental responsibility. He lived his principles to the fullest. His humor, kindness and generosity will be sorely missed by those who loved him.

A memorial is planned for a later date.
