Obituary

ANN (SPRAGUE) TOLMAN, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, formerly of Hingham, passed away on Sunday, March 6th at the Haven Health Center in Cape Elizabeth after a 10 year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Ann was 77.

Born in Hingham, Ann was the daughter of Seth Sprague and Evelyn Cushing Sprague, and until her illness, was a lifelong resident of Hingham. She attended Hingham High School, graduated from Thayer Academy in Braintree and LaSalle Junior College in Newton. Ann married George Sprague Tolman, III in 1950 and together enjoyed antiquing, gardening and volunteering until Alzheimers erased those abilities. Sprague remained her faithful caretaker and eventually moved to the Portland, Maine area to be closed to their daughter. Sprague passed away in 2002.

Ann was a tireless volunteer with a passion for history - especially Hingham town history. she was actively involved in the Hingham Historical Society, and her greatest pleasure was giving tours of the Old Ordinary in Hingham to school children. Ann was also president of the Antiquarian House in Plymouth where she organized their annual Arts and Crafts Show for several years and the Christmas by the Sea house tour.

Perhaps her greatest contributions and friendships came with her involvement as a lifelong member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Ann served in many capacities in the DAR including the National Librarian, the State Regent of the Massachusetts Society of the DAR and as senior president of the Massachusetts Society of the Children of the American Revolution. She was also on the board of trustees of the Hillside School for Boys in Marlborough, a school supported by the DAR.

Ann is survived by her daughter, Deborah Sprague Webster and her granddaughter Megan both of South Portland, Maine. She was predeceased by her brother Seth Sprague, Jr., who lost his life in France during World War II.

A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, May 12th at 1 PM at the Fort Hill Cemetery, Fort Hill St., Hingham.
