Obituary

Charles C. "Charlie" Hayes, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at his home in Charlestown following a 2 month battle with cancer. He was 82 years old.

Charlie was born in Boston on August 25, 1932, a son of the late George Terrell and Mary (Hawkins) Hayes. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Boston Technical High School. Charlie enlisted into the United States Army on February 3, 1954 and served his country faithfully and with honor during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on November 26, 1955 with the rank of Private First Class. Following his military service, Charlie enrolled at Northeastern University at nights and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1964. Charlie began working for the Federal Government in 1965 and retired from the Defense Contract Service Administration as a Quality Manager in 1995 following over 30 years of dedicated service to his country. Charlie was a member of the Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus and The Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association. Charlie was very instrumental and involved with the Milt Schmitt Hockey Program in Charlestown during the late 1960's and 1970's where many young boys started their hockey careers. He enjoyed reading and gardening at his summer home in Raymond, New Hampshire.

Charlie is the beloved husband of 58 years to Mary L. "Marylou" (Mullen) Hayes. He is the devoted father of Charles J. Hayes and his wife Sandra of Stratham, New Hampshire and Julie M. Hayes and her husband Robert Biswanger of Burlington. He is the loving Da to Charles R. Hayes and Gregory D. Hayes. He is the dear brother of the late Mary Ellen Martin and Patricia Rooney and her surviving husband Robert Rooney of Charlestown. Brother-in-law of Patricia Smead and her husband Kenneth of Wareham. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Charlie's Funeral on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. His burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours will be on Monday, August 10, 2015 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
