Harry B. Johnson, Jr., 76, of Fairhaven died Friday May 6, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Maxine F. (Barton) Johnson.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Harry B. and Eugenia (Caron) Johnson, he lived in Fairhaven for many years.
Mr. Johnson was formerly employed as a deputy sheriff and senior corrections officer at the Bristol County House of Correction in New Bedford for 25 years until his retirement.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the Star of the East Lodge A.F. & A.M., the Mattapoisett Fin, Fur, and Feather Club, and the New Bedford Revolver and Rifle Club. He was a former member of American Legion Post 166 and American Legion Post One. He enjoyed hunting and fishing at his camp in Maine.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation of Japan Medal.
Survivors include his longtime companion, Vivian Slowik of New Bedford; a son, Donald R. Johnson of Acushnet; a daughter, Pamela Raposo of New Bedford; five grandchildren, Kendra Raposo, Rebecca Johnson, Amanda Johnson, Joseph D. Raposo, and Donald Johnson; and a great-grandson, Darien Joseph Raposo.
He was the father of the late Harry B. Johnson, III and brother of the late Charles C. Johnson.
His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday May 10, 2005 at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven. Visiting hours will be on Monday May 9, 2005 from 6-9 PM.
