Edward S. Mentzer 75, a Needham resident for over 45 years died on Thursday May 5th at the Newton Wellesley Hospital in Newton. Born in Boston Edward grew up in Newton. He attended Brown University and later graduating from Boston University. During the Korean War he served with the U.S. Army. For most of his working career Edward was a Financial Analyst with State Street Bank. He later owned and operated Carvel Ice Cream in Woburn for many years before turning the business over to his son Stephen. Edward was very active at the Christ Episcopal Church in Needham serving as Treasurer, on the Vestry and other numerous board and committees. A former member of Toastmasters and avid Red Sox fan. He was the beloved husband of 49 years to Jane (Smith). Loving father of Russell S. Mentzer and his wife Susan of Lynn, Lynn S. Jarvis and her husband Frank of Holliston and Stephen A. Mentzer and his wife Irene of Dartmouth. Dear grandfather of Caitlyn, Matthew, Joshua, Nicholas, Tyler, Brianna and Adam. A Memorial Service will be held at the Christ Episcopal Church 1132 Highland Ave Needham on Tuesday May 10th at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours at the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave. Needham on Monday 4-7 PM. Interment service will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials in Ed’s memory may be made to the Christ Episcopal Memorial Fund and to Alzheimer’s Assoc. 36 Cameron Ave. Cambridge, MA 02140-1102.
