NEW BEDFORD — Irene M. (Harwood) Tunstall, age 90 years, of New Bedford, died Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at St. Luke's Hospital.
Daughter of the late Walter and Elizabeth (Shuttleworth) Harwood, she was born in New Bedford on May 18, 1925. A graduate of New Bedford High School and Clark University, she was a teacher in the New Bedford School System for many years at the Charles Ashley School, the Phillips Avenue School and the Knowton School.
A longtime active member of Grace Episcopal Church, Irene was very involved with the church food pantry and Episcopal Church Women. She was also a member of the Saturday Club and the College Club as well as association with the Bristol/Mass./National Teachers Associations.
Irene is survived by her son Richard H. Tunstall of San Diego, Ca.; her daughter Dianne E. Condon and her husband CDR (ret) James M. Jr. of East Lyme, Conn.; her daughter Patricia A. McKay and her husband CDR (ret) Ronald of Chesapeak, Va., and her son Robert Heyman of Petaluma, Ca.; her grandchildren Lynne Cesario, and James Condon III, Andew, Matthew and Alexander McKay, and Sean Heyman; and great-grandchildren Megan, and Jack Dugan, Caroline Cesario, Emma Condon, and James Webster Condon. Visitation will take place on Friday from 6-8 p.m. in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford. Her funeral will be Saturday morning at 9 A.M. in Grace Church, corner of County and School Sts., New Bedford, followed by burial in Pine Grove Cemetery. www.wilsonchapel.net.
