Mary Emma Shultz Henderson, 92, of Ocilla, Georgia, died Monday, July 20, 2015, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Friday, July 24, 2015, at Ocilla United Methodist Church in Ocilla with the Rev. Jay Roberson officiating. Pamela Henderson will offer a prayer. Interment will follow in Brushy Creek Cemetery, Irwin County. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Thursday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mrs. Henderson was born April 16, 1923, in Wilcox County, Georgia to the late Arlie & Myra Poole Shultz. A 1939 graduate of Irwin County High School, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Georgia State College for Women in 1943. Mrs. Henderson continued her education earning both her Masters in Library Science as well as her PhD in Library Science from Florida State University. She was the former librarian for Irwin County High School and retired from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College as the head librarian, having worked for the University System of Georgia for over 20 years. She was a member of the Ben Hill-Irwin Retired Educators Association as well as the Georgia REA. An active member of Ocilla United Methodist Church, she enjoyed working with the youth as well as participating in the Women’s Guild and the UMW.
She is survived by her two sons and their spouses: Dr. Warren J. Henderson, Jr. and his wife Patty of LaGrange and Joseph S. Henderson and his wife Pamela of Washington, D.C.; her granddaughter: Stephanie & Jerome Brumby, II; her grandson: Warren J. “Ware” Henderson, III and his wife Olivia; and her great-grandchildren: Jerome Pound “Behr” Brumby, III, Charles Phillip Brumby, and Warren J. “Hollis” Henderson, IV. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: W. J. Henderson, Sr. and a sister, Edith Williams.
