Jessie Elva Harper Dowdy, 79, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Monday, July 13, 2015, at Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Thursday, July 16, 2015, at Irwinville Baptist Church in Irwinville, with the Rev. Rex Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Waterloo Cemetery in Chula. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, from 6 to 8, at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Dowdy was born November 16, 1935, in Carrollton, Georgia, to the late John William & Lonnie Azell Hammonds Harper. She lived in the community for over 43 years and was a former employee of H. R. Kaminsky & Sons and Y.W. Sportswear. She enjoyed growing flowers & sitting on her porch. She loved her puppies. Mrs. Dowdy was a member of Irwinville Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children: Bobby Joe Dowdy, Sue Handley, Carrie Guy and Levie & John Lunsford, all of Fitzgerald; eleven grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one sister: Bertha Mae H. Kelly & Kevin of Dillon, South Carolina. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Otis Emory Dowdy; a son: William Otis “Buddy” Dowdy; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two great-great grandchildren; four brothers and one sister.
