Charles Ray Adams
April 30, 1929 - July 12, 2015
Charles Ray Adams, 86, departed this earth for his heavenly home on July 12, 2015.
He was born in Cairo, Kentucky on April 30, 1929 to James William Adams Sr. and Verdie Ellen (Crowley) Adams. He was a graduate of Henderson High School in Henderson, KY. He retired from American Family Insurance Company and was a U. S. Army Veteran.
He also worked for A & P Supermarkets for 12 years as a meat cutter and meat department manager.
"Charlie", as most people called him (except his wife, who called him Charles) surrendered his life to Jesus in 1953, at a small Southern Baptist Mission in Huntingburg, Indiana and served his Lord and Savior anyway he could for the rest of his life. He was a charter member of the First Baptist Church in Huntingburg. He was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Indianapolis in 1961, and served as a deacon at Kingston Avenue Baptist Church and Redeemer Baptist Church in Anderson. He was a faithful Adult Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Director, Church Training Director, and also served as Assistant Music Director. He also would occasionally preach at his own church and other churches and missions. He was the treasurer for East Central Baptist Association for 40 years and a Gideon.
Charles was known for his quick smile and infectious laugh. He loved singing about his Lord; many people commented about how much they enjoyed his enthusiastic singing (even if it was occasionally off-key). For many years, he made video recordings of his family and of church events, such as Vacation Bible School. Both he and his wife were involved in their church's clown ministry.
Charles married Mary Frances Wirth on August 7, 1949. In just a few days, they would have been married 66 years. They have five daughters, Patricia "Pat" (Phil) Storm, Middletown, IN; Cynthia "Cindy" (JD) Traylor, Hanover, IN; Pamela "Pam" Stafford, Anderson, IN; Marilyn (Ron) Roehr, Marion, IN and Carolyn (Danny) Glover, Anderson, IN. They also have fifteen grandchildren, Paul (Renae) Storm, Monticello, IN; Petrina (Mylon) Stockton, Noblesville, IN; Peter (Danielle) Storm, Seymour, IN; Charity (Joe) Freeman, Fort Wayne, IN; Heather (Mike) Foy, Madison, IN; Kimberly (Jay) Crawford, Madison, IN ; Matthew (Angel) Traylor, Hanover, IN; Michael (Leila) Traylor, Madison, IN; Kandida (Dwayne) Echols, Cary, NC; Kristina Anderson, Anderson, IN; Kade (Katie) Hoover, Anderson, IN; Gabriel (Brooks) Carson, Huntington, IN; Stacey ( Max) Baird, Terre Haute, IN; Stephen (Karla Copeland) Remington, Anderson, IN; Stephanie (Randy) Davis, Anderson, IN; plus 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Martha Galloway Adams, Henderson, KY and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, three brothers, James William "Pete" Adams, George Adams and Curtis Bethel Adams and a sister, Mary Frances "Sue" Hoppenstedt.
Special thanks to the staff at Bethany Pointe Health Campus and to St. Vincent's Anderson Hospice, who helped love and care for him during his final days.
Services will be held at Redeemer Baptist Church, 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 16 officiated by Pastor Brad Storm of Redeemer Baptist Church, and Pastors Paul Storm and J. D. Traylor.
