Manuel Oliveira, 84, of New Bedford died April 15, 2005 at home after a long illness.
He was the husband of Gloria (Fontes) Oliveira.
Born in Dartmouth, the son of the late Joseph Oliveira and Mary Stella (Cunha) DaLuz, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was formerly employed by several local fish processing plants for many years until his retirement as foreman. Prior to that he was a commercial fisherman.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II as a sergeant with the 52nd Armored Infantry Battalion. He participated in the battles of the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe and was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Prisoner of War Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, European -Africian-Middle Eastern Campaign with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, Expert Infantryman Badge, Honorable Service Lapel Button, Expert Badge & Carbine Bar & Machine Gun Bar & Recoilless Rifle Bar, Sharpshooter Badge & Rifle Bar and Marksman Badge & Machine Gun Bar.
He enjoyed art painting, scrimshaw, travel and had a passion for raising and racing greyhounds.
Survivors include his wife, 2 daughters, Danielle and Lorene Oliveira, both of Fairhaven; 2 sons, Michael Oliveria and Russell Oliveira both of New Bedford; and a grandson, Christopher Little of New Bedford; a daughter-in-law, Denise Oliveira of New Bedford; several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visiting hours in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Monday, April 18th from 4-8 PM.
Interment private.
