Alvina R. (Wiemes) Olsen, 86, of 25 Wiemes Court, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital.
Alvina was born on May 24, 1918 in Mystic, Connecticut to Herbert and Alvina (Schnellen) Wiemes. In 1946 she married the late Oluf K. Olsen.
After graduating from Stonington High School in 1936, Alvina attended Yale University School of Music, and proudly maintained alumni status in the Association of Yale Alumni for many years. She was formerly coral director at the Waterford Senior Center, and was a member of the Methodist Church of New London.
A longtime piano teacher in the towns of Mystic, Noank, and Waterford, Alvina shared her love of music with her pupils, teaching more than 400 students over the years. She was an avid rug-hooker, knitter, and gardener, as well as a prolific reader of non-fiction. Alvina loved wildlife and bird-watching, and adored her feline companions, Missy and Lucy. She was a caring and compassionate mother, grandmother, and friend who will be dearly missed by those close to her.
Alvina is survived by her son, Oluf H. Olsen of Waterford, and two granddaughters, Kristine Olsen of Stafford, and Bethany Olsen of Coventry.
A Graveside Funeral Service will be conducted at the family plot at Elm Grove Cemetery, Rte. 27, Mystic, on Monday at 1pm. There are no visiting hours.
