Obituary

PALMER – Peter J. DiMascola, 66, a resident of Palmer, was Called Safely Home on Monday, June 29, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at his home after a valiant battle with a Brain Glioblastoma surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Westfield on December 22, 1948, a beloved son of the late James and Mary M. (Keniston) DiMascola. He was raised in Westfield and later came with his family to Springfield where he graduated from the High School of Commerce. He later lived in Ware before moving to Agawam where he lived for several years before moving to Palmer around 1998. He furthered his education and received an Associate’s Degree from STCC in Springfield and a Master’s Degree from Cambridge College. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and attained the rank of Sergeant. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal. He was previously employed at the Digital Corporation in Springfield, Evergreen Solar in Southbridge and the Karl Storz Company in Charlton. He was last employed as a Production Manager at the Incom Corporation in Southbridge. He was a former member of the Melha Shrine in Springfield and a volunteer with the Special Olympics. Most of all, he was a wonderful provider to his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Donna M. (Hayward) DiMascola. They were married on July 4, 1970 at Sacred Heart Church in Springfield and were blessed with nearly 45 years of happiness together. Besides his wife, he leaves his two loving children, Christopher P. DiMascola and his wife, Nicole, of Atlanta, GA and Tracie L. Wood and her husband, Nathan, of Belchertown; his two cherished granddaughters whom he adored, Hannah R. Wood and Madison G. Wood; his dear sister, Angela DiMascola of Springfield; his dear brother-in-law, Richard Cross; his dear sister-in-law, Alice DiMascola of Columbus, OH; his dear sisters-in-law of the Hayward family, Mary Ellen Halpy of Springfield and Cheryl Chicoine and her husband, Jacques, of Springfield; his dear brother-in-law of the Hayward family, Donald M. “Mick” Hayward and his wife, Sheila, of South Hadley; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the DiMascola and Hayward families. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear brother, James DiMascola; and his dear sister, Patricia Cross. His funeral will be held on Monday morning, July 6, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. His Committal Service with United States Air Force Honors will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, July 5, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory for brain cancer research to the Pan-Mass Challenge and payment directed to David Reardon, MD (In Memory of Peter DiMascola), 450 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA 02215 or online at www.pmc.org.
