WEST NEWBURY: Daniel C. Leary, 89, died Saturday, June 27, 2015 at the Prescott House in North Andover following a brief illness.
Born in West Newbury on April 26, 1926, he was the son of the late Michael J. and Alice M. (Cooney) Leary, the second of five children. A lifelong resident of West Newbury, he was a graduate of West Newbury High School and the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, where he was an avid follower of its football team.
A longtime landlord in town, Dan was well versed in local history and known for his dry wit, generous spirit and gentle manner. Until recently, Dan enjoyed driving the back roads of town, and he could often be found at an area Dunkin’ Donuts enjoying a coffee. The family would like to thank the staffs of Beth Israel Hospital and Prescott House for the care provided to Dan during his illness.
He is survived by his siblings, Margaret L. Walker of Bishopville, MD, John M. Leary and his wife, Mary T. of West Newbury, Mary C. Cullen of North Reading, a brother-in-law, Joseph J. Derro of West Newbury and twelve nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by her sister, Carol A. Derro, two brothers-in-law, Philip T. Cullen and Francis V. Walker, and one nephew, Philip T. Cullen, Jr.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at St. Ann’s Church, 300 Main St., West Newbury at 11:00 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday in the Linnehan-Grondin Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice. Interment will be held in Bridge Street Cemetery, West Newbury.
