Obituary

Hailer, Mary Eileen (Gilson), peacefully passed away on June 28, 2015 at the age of 91.

Mary was the beloved wife of the late Frederick C. Hailer, former Boston City Counselor and Massachusetts State Representative, sister of Leonora Dursin of Wakefield RI, Dr. Irving Gilson of Greenville RI, and the late George E. Gilson 1st Lt. USMC, mother of ten children: Mary Norkum of Saugus, Elizabeth Ross of Peabody, Margaret Brophey of Pepperell, Frederick Hailer of Hampstead, NC, Joan Harrington of Kingston, RI, George Hailer of Natick, Christine Baker of Holliston, John Hailer of Boston, Richard Hailer of Boston and the late Robert Hailer. Also survived by daughters- and sons-in-law, 25 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Her love for life began August 28, 1923, Mary lived her childhood years in North Providence Rhode Island where she graduated from St. Xavier's Academy. An accomplished coloratura soprano, pianist and dancer, she studied with the late Eve Handy Hall and at the New England Conservatory of Music. As a young person, she remembered fondly summers at Matunuck Beach. She was an avid New England sports fan and loved politics and current events. Mary will be greatly missed by all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be on Wednesday July 1 from 2:00-7:00 PM at the Robert J. Lawler & Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St. West Roxbury, MA.


A Celebration of Mary’s life and a Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated Thursday morning July 2, at 11:30 AM in Saint Theresa of Avila Church West Roxbury. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
